Welcome   Quilting   Yarn crafts   Notions & extras   Classes   Patterns   About us
Valentine’s Wall Hanging or Crib size
based on Moda’s Layers of Love
with added borders

Supplies:                                                                                       WOF= width of fabric
(1) Charm Pack, we used "Love You" by Sandy Gervais          RST=right sides together
2/3 yard off-white fabric to match                                                  All seams 1/4”
3/4 or 1 yard pink to match, includes binding                              Press seams as you go
1 1/2 yard backing fabric
Batting 40” by 50” piece

We took Moda’s Layers of Love free pattern from their website (here) and cut the size down from Layer Cake (10” squares) to a Charm Pack size (5” squares) and added fun borders!

Cut:
(12) 2 1/2” x WOF strips off-white fabric
(4) 1” x WOF strips strips off-white fabric
(3) 1 1/2” x WOF strips off-white fabric
(3) 1 1/2” x WOF strips of pink fabric
(5) 2 1/2” x WOF strips of pink fabric

First, cut (36) charm pack squares in half, watching directional fabric patterns. You’ll have (72) 2 1/2” x 5” rectangles.
Cut (144) 1” x 1” squares from the off-white fabric.
Cut (72) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares from the pink strips.

Pieceing:
Taking the small 1” off-white squares, fold on the diagonal and finger press or press a few at a time with iron to mark a line. You’ll sew on this line. Sew RST to the top of each “heart” rectangle, as shown on Moda’s free pattern. Trim. Press.

In the same manner, fold the (72) 2 1/2” squares on the diagonal and mark by pressing. (You could also mark each one with disappearing ink pen.) NOTE: On Moda’s instructions, they are using a bigger square and save a portion of it for another project by marking it twice. We did not do that since our squares start out so much smaller.

Sew the 2 1/2" squares RST to the bottom of the charm pack rectangles as shown online. Trim and press.
Sew the two halves of the hearts together, but leave 3 hearts separated (for the ends of rows as shown).

Sew your blocks together as shown in the picture online. Don’t add the off-white sashing yet! From here, we altered the pattern!

Take the total (6) 1 1/2” x WOF strips in pink and off-white. Sew together lengthwise alternating colors as shown in our diagram.

Press carefully, trying to keep from getting wavy. Now trim one end so it is straight and continue cutting 1 1/2” strips form this, shown by the dotted lines. You’ll have (14) segments of (6) checkered squares, pink and off-white.

Sew (4) of these strips together to form a 24” row of checkered sashing. You’ll need (2) of these 24” strips.

Next cut (6) 2 1/2” x WOF off-white strips to about 24-25” long and sew to the heart segments of quilt top. Our diagram on the right shows layout. The skinny row is the checkered sashing and the top at this point should measure 24" x 42".
Borders:
Cut (2) of the 2 1/2" x WOF strips to about
42" length and pin to the sides, starting at
center points (find center point of border by
folding in half; find center point of quilt top by
folding it in half; then match the points and
pin from center out). Sew these borders to the sides.

Next, add a checkered border strip. Piece the segments of checked squares together to form (2) that are 41 squares long (41 inches). Pin to the sides as you did above, center out, and sew to fit each side length.

For top and bottom, piece together segments of checked squares to form (2) that are 30 squares long (30 inches).Pin to top and bottom from centers out and sew to fit the top and bottom, matching seams at corners so the blocks line up nicely.

To make the off-white borders for the long sides, you'll use the leftover 2 1/2" strips you cut off of the 24" pieces you used for sashing. Attach (2) of these leftovers to (2)  2 1/2" x WOF strips to make them long enough for side borders. Find centers of borders and of the quilt top and pin as before. Sew to fit the long sides.

Use (2) of the 2 1/2" x WOF strips for top and bottom borders. Find center points as before and pin and sew.

Now it's time to add batting and backing and quilt as you'd like! Binding is about 178" of continuous binding to fit all the way around.
